Having quit her father’s criminal business and tried to find work that weighs less heavily on the conscience, she has put together her own ship with the expected group of talented misfits. The book follows the adventures of one Captain Eva Innocente, notorious smuggler and all-round badass. ![]() Now admittedly that’s not the sort of sophisticated literary novel that usually attracts the Clarke judges, but how could I go wrong? It promised space opera and psychic cats. But I was going off covers and blurbs, so the book that caught my eye was Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes. I did not manage to pick the winner, which was The Animals in that Country by Laura Jean McKay. I hadn’t read all of them, and decided to take a look. The lovely people at Mr B’s in Bath had a display up of Clarke Award finalists. ![]()

![]() ![]() I loved the scenes in the second half of the book when Dean has finally understood how important Poppy is to him-and vice versa. Poppy has been a pet ever since he can remember, and once Dean gets his head out of his behind, he can actually really help Poppy. He is fundamentally uncomfortable with the whole Master/pet situation, but realizes that he has to wean Poppy off that idea slowly. He is also quite clever at figuring out what others may want, and he uses those skills to protect Dean and his friends.ĭean is a tough assassin (just like Gage used to be) and it takes him a long time to "get" Poppy. As he learns about things like refrigerators and has his first hot shower, his intelligence begins to show, and he develops the kind of self-confidence that allows him to stand up for himself and show how courageous he really is. He sees Dean as his new Master since he thinks he is only good enough to be a pet. Abused for years, he has no idea what is going on in the outside world. Poppy is a great guy, and wonderful despite what he has been through. The mix of tension and humor is well-balanced, but this book leans more toward the suspense as more dark machinations are discovered. ![]() Both Noah and his mate Gage are back, but this book focuses on Dean (Gage's friend) and a man he rescues when looking for traces of another team member. As much fun as the first book, this sequel continues the story of the unusual cat shifters who recently discovered their true king, Noah. ![]() ![]() Indestructubles Little Golden Books Magic School Bus Magic Tree House Pete the Cat Step Into Reading Book The Hunger Games By POPULAR SERIES Chronicles of Narnia Curious Geoge Diary of a Wimpy Kid Fancy Nancy Harry Potter I Survived If You Give. ![]() By TOPIC Award Winning Books African American Children's Books Biography & Autobiography Diversity & Inclusion Foreign Language & Bilingual Books Hispanic & Latino Children's Books Holidays & Celebrations Holocaust Books Juvenile Nonfiction New York Times Bestsellers Professional Development Reference Books Test Prep.By GRADE Elementary School Middle School High Schoolīy AGE Board Books (newborn to age 3) Early Childhood Readers (ages 4-8) Children's Picture Books (ages 3-8) Juvenile Fiction (ages 8-12) Young Adult Fiction (ages 12+).BESTSELLERS in EDUCATION Shop All Education Books. ![]() ![]() ![]() Grumm thinks all is well because the daisy will be gone soon, but he quickly realizes that Mayzie seems to be wilting too and discerns that if the daisy dies so will Mayzie! But there's quite a lot of violence which I was surprised about! And honestly, I really liked that about it. I really liked this and was honestly hard-pressed to differentiate it between an action-packed spy book for adults. Maybe I should start reading more spy books?! There's that non-fiction one right now by Amarylis Fox hmmm.ĪNYWAY. Plus, I do surprisingly like a lot of spy stories - Alias, Harriet, Homeland (problematic guilty pleasure?), American Spy, D.E.B.S., Code Named Verity, etc. I wanted a book I could suggest to boys (and mothers of boys who obviously have internalized misogyny) that had a girl protag. I am quite surprised by how much I liked this! A middle grade spy thriller? Very off-brand for me. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ī picketer in Universal City, California carries a sign deriding film studios proposals to replace writers with generative AI.
